Umbrella organizations for food banks
http://www.feedingamerica.org/

Definitions:
	Food bank - warehouse that stores the food
	Food pantry - distributes food to clients within the community
	A Food Policy Council (FPC) consists of a group of representatives and stakeholders from many sectors of the food system. Ideally, the councils include participants representing all five sectors of the food system (production, consumption, processing, distribution and waste recycling)

Aspects of the problem to solve

Healthy Food Access
  * food desert - making fresh/healthy food more available
  * community gardens / local produce mapping
  * nutritional info

Non-perishables
 * gathering & managing info about surplus non-perishables from groceries
 * gathering & managing info about surplus non-perishables from restaurants

Fresh food
  * gathering & managing info* about available "2nd class" produce/fresh food (pre-store)
  * gathering & managing info about surplus produce (post-store, still usable)
  Soliciting, Receiving, Sorting, Warehousing, Distributing

  * what do we have
  when does it expire
  how much have we got
  how is it divisible / packaged (knapsack)
  how do you match needs to have (stable marriage problem?)

Information management
* managing the charity aspect of it (donations - for tax purposes; https://www.thetaxadviser.com/newsletters/2016/jul/charitable-donations-of-food-inventory.html)
* managing the place aspect of it (where deliveries go/where pickups happen)
* managing reporting back to agencies / donors -- what got sent where
* managing logistics of delivery (routes; traveling salesperson)
* managing donations ($)

Constraints
low bandwdth
no web access necessarily
local systems should feed info to regional systems from reporting

Scott (Berea College) talked about...
- Partner: Grow Appalachia: https://growappalachia.berea.edu/
- Constraints:
	- Rural challenges: Low/no technology, mobile-friendly is best;
	- Not tech-savvy users (imagine church group in a town of 1000)
- Tracking of all the things:
	- Tracking of people who are receiving donations (Charity Tracker: http://www.charitytracker.net/)
	- Tracking of places where need is not being met (Capacity Building map; USDA map is out of date for our region: https://www.fns.usda.gov/capacitybuilder)
	- Food to places with need matched to places with excess food

Amy
Carleton College
Interested in 2 aspects of the problem:
* Food recovery: distribute unused food from the dining halls to 2 local food organizations. There are surely logistics issues here.
* Food sustainability: making sure Carleton is making sustainable food purchasing choices (somehow this relates to the first point, I believe)

There are also some initiatives around food recovery from local farms ("gleaning"). It would be interesting to connect that with the other food recovery initiative.
I have a meeting set up with one of our "food fellows" in our Civic Engagement office this spring to talk about potential collaborations.

Lori & Darci
Nassau Community College
We have a food pantry on campus - have met with local people from the NEST
* intake form
* expiration date
* scanning for outgoing inventory
* mobile app - share information about hours, organize volunteers, connection students to resources

Monisha (The College of New Jersey)

Book: The Good Food Revolution, by Will Allen.
Describes his project, Growing Power, and honors and celebrates what others have done to promote healthy communities through urban gardens that grow affordable and sustainable “good food.”
Summer 2016 reading, around TCNJ’s intellectual theme, “Toward Just and Sustainable Communities”.

Local Organization - Mercer Street Friends in Trenton
- a focus area is their Food Bank
Local Organization - Isles, Inc
- a focus area is community gardens / urban farming
- another focus area is mapping locations of healthy food outlets, for access in food deserts

Matt spoke to Griselda from BigHuman (griselda@bighuman.com), that developed Plentiful. Noone is available today to answer questions, but contact her later and they will give you all the info we want.

Copied from Gina's notes above:
